Ní neart go cur le chéile

Active School

We have long prided ourselves as having an active school. We recognise the importance of having a healthy body and a healthy mind. We are blessed with excellent facilities, with two large playing pitches, a basketball court and a hard surface area.  The school building boasts a large General Purposes Hall. A perimeter path was recently completed that allows pupils to ‘walk and talk’.

A variety of sports are played during P.E. and at breaktimes. Gaelic Games have a special place in school life and after school training is organised throughout the year, using the school facilities, Killavullen GAA Grounds and Mallow GAA Complex. Irish Dancing is taught to all classes and all pupils are taken to Mallow Swimming Pool for a series of lessons every year.

Meanwhile teachers and staff are especially aware of the importance of promoting good mental health. An inclusive and supportive atmosphere is fostered. Wonderful programmes like ‘Mindful Matters’ and ‘Weaving Wellbeing’ explore the issues that affect our mental health while growing up and help develop key skills and positive attitudes. Initiatives such as the ‘Buddy System. Help to replace barriers and apprehension with strong connections and friendships.

Heathy eating is vital to remaining healthy and reaching our full potential at home, in school and in the community. Children are educated as to the importance of a balanced diet and making good choices, while recognising that we all welcome an occasional treat.

Underpinning all these opportunities and initiatives is the fantastic work done in recent years by our Active Schools Committee. This group is drawn from the various classes, staff members and interested parents, who meet to share and implement ideas to further promote our commitment to staying healthy and active. Their hard work was recognised when the school was awarded the ‘Active Flag’ during a memorable ceremony a few years ago. The mission continues, however, and it is the responsibility of all of us to constantly build an active school.
