Ballygown Parents’ Association

‘Research shows that parental interests and attitude to school, to books and to education are the single most important influence on a child’s learning.’

-National Parents’ Council

Ballygown National School is very fortunate to have an active Parents’ Association. All parents/guardians are encouraged to participate in the association; indeed, any person whose child is attending this school is automatically a member. The Parents’ Association meets regularly and organises an extensive programme of educational, social and fundraising events.

During the year the Parents’ Association helps organise such events as table quizzes (children’s and adults), raffles, the Christmas Concert, fun days, and the Fr. Burns Shield. The Fr. Burns Shield is a day of football and fun to commemorate Fr. Burns, who served as manager of the school, before his untimely death in 1989. Every year it organises a rota of parents to be present at after-school training.

The Parents’ Association supports many of the activities in the school. It takes responsibility for collecting parents’ contributions towards funding the teaching of music, swimming and dancing. Cheques can be made payable to Ballygown N.S. Parents’ Association.

Over the years, the Parents’ Association have helped organise many events that yielded extraordinary sums. ‘Who Wants To Be a Thousandaire?’ (2007) and ‘Strictly Ballygown’ (2018) each realised in excess of €50,000 to help fund school and playground development. It has made vital investments in books for our literacy scheme, computers, jerseys, dancing costumes and a countless amount of other resources that benefit all our children.

An Annual General Meeting of the Parents’ Association is held every September. A committee is elected, which includes a chairperson, secretary, treasurer and P.R.O. These officers liaise regularly with the teachers on matters of mutual importance.
