Jerseys for Ballygown

In October 2014, our local radio station C103fm ran a competition, inviting schools from around the county to submit a video making the case for a new set of jerseys. It was a challenge that we couldn’t ignore! After having great fun producing the video, we were thrilled to make the shortlist.

Excitement reached fever-pitch as a public vote commenced. Everyone with a Ballygown connection, and a good number with none, were called upon to muster as many likes as possible for our video on the C103 facebook page.

Over a gripping few days, when the field was reduced to a two-horse race, work, rest and play were suspended in a mammoth effort to cross the line in front. The lead changed a few times as Timoleague matched our efforts, but when the 6.00 a.m. deadline came, we held the lead, with a mere 26 likes!

Victory would not have been ours without the extraordinary effort of the pupils, parents and staff. It certainly would not have been possible either without a massive effort by our past pupils and the wonderful support we got from Killavullen parish and the neighbouring parishes and schools.

The senior pupils submitted ideas for the jersey design and then voted for the final choice. The jerseys were presented by C103 at a fantastic celebration combined with the presentation of our Active Flag by none other than Cork legend, Jimmy Barry Murphy, and Irish Olympian athlete, Brendan Boyce.

A few weeks later, we enjoyed a novel challenge game against Timoleague, our closest rivals in the jersey competition, kindly hosted by C103. It was a fitting conclusion to a memorable chapter.
